Moving Tips & Tricks

Moving from one house to another can be both exciting and challenging at the same time. Staying organized, making lists, and planning ahead make this whole process easier but don't forget that having a few tips up your sleeve will help as well!

I have helped many families pack and get ready for their big moves. Not to mention the amount of time that I've moved myself, countless times! You may be surprised to know some handy tips on how you can make moving more efficient with these simple hacks.

#1. DIY Handles

If you find yourself struggling to carry heavy boxes, try cutting handholds in two sides of the box with a utility knife! Leave top flaps attached and fold them over for easy carrying. I also reinforce these triangular cut-outs by applying some packing tape so they don't rip too badly on corner areas.

#2. Masking Tape on Mirrors

In the unfortunate event that you're ever in a car accident and end up with a shattered mirror, use masking tape to place a large X on your mirrors. It won't stop anything from breaking but this will absorb some shock so maybe then it'll stay intact long enough for help to arrive!

#3. Take a Photo of Your Electrical Cords

Before disconnecting your computer or T.V cords take a quick snapshot so you can refer back to the picture in your new home and not get mixed up! Easy set up.

#4. Pack a First Night Box

The last thing you need on move day is to be stuck without your morning or evening essentials. Pack a labeled box with all of that in mind, and then think about what else may be important for the first few hours after arrival in your new home. Keep this box in personal vehicle, so you know where it is right away.

You might want to include: toilet paper, toiletries, medications and snacks. Basic cleanings supplies, COFFEE A coffeemaker, a first-aid kit, a knife/pet supplies, a night light for the kids, bedding, disposable plates & cups, & utensils. It is also a good idea for each member of the family to pack a small bag that contains personal cloths & belongings that they might need for the first couple days. Pack as if you're going on an short trip!

#5. Paper or Styrofoam Plates

Have you cast aside your Styrofoam or paper plates yet? If not, then it's time for using them in the move. Place one between each ceramic plate to protect them from chipping the surface and stack all together. Most people wrap each plate and stack them in the box horizontally. After all, this is how they sit piled up in your cupboard so it only seems right to transport them that same way! Well what might not be immediately apparent though is every single bump will inevitably cause some sort of movement with those plates--even if wrapped and protected. This way they are less likely to break and shift in the box, especially if you pack the spaces around them with paper, dish towels or other soft materials.

#6. Hanging Clothes in Garbage Bags

Keep your clothes on the hangers while still protected in garbage bags!

This means you don't need to worry about packing your clothes when you leave the house, and they'll arrive wrinkle-free at your new place. This little trick will save you time. No need taking each garment off there hangers, and then putting them back on in your new home!

#7. Double Box Your Valuables

If you're nervous about anything getting broken during the move, consider double boxing it. Giving fragile items extra protection. This is especially true for electronics like your computer or television! Don't forget to get bubble tape and all sorts of protective gear too so nothing gets ruined on either end.

#8. Color Code Your Boxes

When it comes to color coding, the options are endless. You might have to buy a few rolls of different colored tape, but then you can use it to identify your rooms or contents. You will find this very helpful on the other end of the move.

#9. Keep A Sense of Humor

Stay calm! It's ok, you'll get there eventually. Moving day might be super stressful but just remember that everything will work out in the end. Before the day starts tell yourself that everything will be fine.
