Sacred Birth Keeper
The Birth Keeper Relationship
I bring an understanding of how Birth works. In doing so, I offer you and your family a complete container for receiving Life and giving Birth in wholeness, presence and grace.
The openness and intimacy of the birth process requires honesty from everyone involved. From our inhalation and exhalation, our silence and sound, we come into the present, in union, in this state is where you will know without a doubt what needs to be done. And you will be free to do it.
Dads, Partners, Grandmothers, Aunties, Friends
I do not replace the father or anyone you are close to. Instead, I take away fear and enable them to help you in simple, practical ways. They can breathe and sound with you. Take turns massaging you and applying counter-pressure to relieve pain. Draw you a bath. Play music you like. Bring food and drink. Fear and anxiety melt and your family can participate in the birth in a deep, nurturing way. A doula is not just a gift to the birthing woman and her child but is a gift to all who love her.
I’m quite sure I would like an epidural at some point in my birth. Will you still work with me?
Yes! I work with anyone who wants me to be with them, regardless of how they anticipate giving birth. I do not have an ideal that I am hoping you will realize so I am not sitting in judgement. Every birth is different; every woman is different; every baby is different. What is required at a birth is always unique. Neither you nor I have any idea before hand what will be needed. Birth is truly a step into the unknown.
I do know the principles involved in how birth works and how an epidural can affect the process. An epidural is often seen initially as the only way to give birth without suffering and this is not so. An epidural is a powerful medical intervention that can do great good and great harm. I can be of help in your making a decision whether, when and how to use it.
I have been labelled “high risk”. I will have lots of necessary medical intervention at my birth. Would you still be of help to me?
Yes, no matter what the conditions! Whether a “high risk” hospital birth, an uncomplicated home birth, or something in between!
When there are fears surrounding a birth that is particularly high, whether that fear is coming from you, family or medical staff. Having someone beside you the whole step of the process can help relieve these fears as you know you are not alone. Healing is non-linear and can sometimes take quite unexpected forms. The heart of birth can be felt no matter the situation.
I am planning a home birth attended by midwives. Would you provide anything that the midwives don’t already?
My experience is that whether I am in the hospital or at the birthing woman’s home, what I provide is unique and greatly appreciated by my clients and the healthcare providers around us.
I bring a depth and comprehensive set of skills and understanding to your pregnancy, birth and the early weeks of mothering that complement the skills and philosophy of your midwives beautifully. I make their job easier by being completely focused on you and your baby and they make my job easier by giving us all the trust, security and space needed to let the intelligence of Birth flow!
While my partner wants to support me, he is feeling squeamish about the intensity of the birthing process, on both the physical and emotional levels. Are you comfortable with him taking a back seat or perhaps not being there at all?
Of course! In many traditional societies, men are not present at Birth. It is not a requirement for being a loving father. And certainly if he is anxious, his presence will not be helpful!
That being said, it is common to find fear dissolves in the reality of the situation. I’ve seen many a worried father participate with calm wonder in the birth of his child. I am there to help him receive and respond to you. This will unfold according to the dynamics of your relationship. Men are socialized to take action in all situations. Given permission to be still and simply can take affect on your relationship in beautiful ways!
Finding Your Birth Keeper/Doula
A doula’s presence can mean the difference between a long, difficult birth and one that moves with grace. She creates intimate space where life can flow. Your family can join you in this space and share their love. Medical staff is more likely to enter this realm with respect.
Here are ideas for when you meet with me or other potential doulas. You might interview your doctor or midwife too!
Find someone who can be quiet and still: who can listen, who can receive. Someone who is gentle.
Find someone who is not afraid of Birth, or of you. Not afraid of your fear, or your pain. Not afraid of your passion.
Find someone who can join you with touch, breath and sound and can stay with you, hour after hour. Someone who is strong.
Find someone who knows her own body. She will be able to know yours and what it needs.
Why was she drawn to working with birthing women?
How long has she been doing this work? Why does she continue?
Has she given birth herself? How? When? Where? With whom? If she were to give birth again, what would she do differently? What not? Her own experience of giving birth and how she has responded to it will be at the root of what she does with you, whether she’s conscious of that or not.
If she hasn’t given birth, what experiences give her the foundation for this work? How has she been opened? What does she draw on to peacefully meet the intensity of the opening she is witness to and a part of?
Who are her clients? Are they women with specific backgrounds, needs and desires or are they a diverse group? Would she describe you as a typical or atypical client?
What has been her experience of breastfeeding? Is it theoretical or can she latch a baby to the breast? Has she latched her own? If not, whom will she refer you to?
What is her understanding of the first weeks of motherhood and fatherhood?
How do you envision giving birth? Share this with her. You will let her see who you are and what you need.
Find someone who can grow her roots down to the centre of the earth and be your tether, your witness, your friend.

We’ll meet, three times, for about two hours each. This will give us time to get to know one another. You can share your history and your hopes.

We will stay in telephone/text contact, particularly in the last weeks of your pregnancy.

“Amy was/ is my doula. She has shown up for my family in the biggest way possible. Her postpartum care has been immeasurably valuable. Nothing is too much for her and she just seems to intuitively know what needs to be done and how to help in such a way that fits in with your family. She also takes amazing photos and has many skills that can contribute to integration and healing after birth. Trust me when I say that everyone needs an Amy.”
— Katrin G.
“As a first time mom I can’t imagine my experience without Amy. I hired Amy for her postpartum service. Amy came to our house the day we came home from the hospital and as new parents we were deer in headlights - she knew exactly what to do. Amy helped us SO much, from breastfeeding, to watching the baby so we could nap, and keeping me fed/hydrated. This was one of the best services to receive as new parents and I would HIGHLY recommend this to any new mom. Amy is such a calm, warm, and loving person she made us feel so comfortable. Her knowledge paired with her beautiful soul guided us onto the new parent path beautifully.”
— Lisa S.
“Amy Joy Mistal was an absolute blessing to my pregnancy and birthing experience! She was so welcoming, wonderful, kind and knowledgeable. She got along so well with my partner and became part of our family during this time. Through laughs, tears and the depths of labour she stayed by my side making me feel held, safe and always supported! My labour was very lengthy & she stayed the entire journey by my side. I'll never forget the care and kindness I received from her. Whoever receives her care is blessed! Thank you Amy!”
— Hayley B.
“Amy went above and beyond to support Carlos and I to prepare to welcome Elijah into our lives. She gave us peace of mind leading up to his birth and provided us with exceptional support afterwards. There were days that I didn’t know I needed her support until she arrived and I was so thankful to see her, ask her questions, and have her guidance on breast feeding and to have a nap! Amy has a special way with little ones. Elijah was so calm in her arms for hours. Words can’t say how grateful we are.”

Postpartum Doula
The benefits of having a dedicated postpartum Doula are immense. A good example would be the support they offer to new parents, who can find themselves feeling overwhelmed by their responsibilities or uncertain about how best to handle all that comes with being a new parent. Not only does this help moms feel prepared; it also gives them peace-of-mind knowing someone else has got things under control while Mom takes care of getting back on her feet.
A good post-delivery care plan can include daytime or overnight assistance from an experienced professional who will provide information, advice & ‘on the job’ training for new parents.
Your doula is like having a personal trainer at work. You don't expect to start your new job without someone there who has done this before, and they will be able to guide you through the process from day one so that it's easier on both of you!
How your Doula can support you:
Practical, hands on tools for new parents
Someone to discuss your birth experience with who really wants to hear how you feel about it
Baby care techniques such as different burping positions, quick ways to change baby and walk you through various ways to bathe your baby
Partners are given suggestions on how to be supportive during this time of transition and healing
Becoming a parent can be difficult emotionally, your doula is there to listen to how you are feeling and give you guidance
Hands on support and tips for feeding your baby
Extra set of hands to allow parents the ability to shower or grab a nap
Spend time with baby so parents can sleep or spend quality time with older children
Nighttime can be a challenge for new parents; Overnight doula support can allow parents to get sleep and reassurance during this time
Throw in a load of laundry for you or do light tidy up so you can focus on your baby
Meal preparation and making sure mom is eating well and taking care of herself so she can take care of baby

The cards are designed to help women focus on their positive inner dialogue and remind them of their strength and power.
